Questions and answers
Short answers about playing Game Boy Color and Game Boy games on your Nintendo 64 with Cart64. The guides go into more detail.
Can you play Game Boy Color games on an N64?
Yes. Cart64 turns a .gbc or .gb file into a .z64 cartridge with our own Game Boy Color player for the N64. Copy it to a flash cart that runs homebrew .z64 files and it plays on an original Nintendo 64 or an M64, with saves.
How do I turn a .gbc file into a .z64?
Open cart64.com, drop the .gbc or .gb file on the box, choose Fit or Sharp, and press Make my cartridge. Your browser saves a .z64 file named after the game. Copy it to your flash cart's SD card and start it from the menu.
Is my game uploaded anywhere?
No. The cartridge is built on your device, in your browser. The file you drop in, its name and its title are never sent to us or anyone else.
Is Cart64 free?
Yes. There is no account, no ads and nothing to pay.
Which flash carts work?
Any N64 flash cart that runs homebrew .z64 files, such as SummerCart64, EverDrive 64 and 64drive. Copy the .z64 to the SD card (or load it over USB on a 64drive) and pick it in the menu.
Does it work on a real N64?
Yes. Cart64 cartridges run on original Nintendo 64 hardware and on the M64, from a flash cart.
Do I need an Expansion Pak?
No. Games over about 2.5 MB load in pieces while you play, and the Expansion Pak helps with that, but it is not required. If a game ever needs it, the cartridge says so with code 7.
Which games work?
Most Game Boy Color and original Game Boy games: cartridges with no chip, MBC1, MBC2, MBC3 (with its clock) and MBC5, up to 8 MB. Cartridges with special hardware, such as MBC7 (tilt), the Game Boy Camera, HuC1, HuC3, TAMA5 and MMM01, are not supported yet, and Cart64 tells you before it builds anything.
Can I play Pokemon Crystal on my N64?
Yes, with your own copy of the game. Pokemon Crystal and Pokemon Yellow run near full speed, with brief slowdowns in busy scenes. Pokemon Gold and Pokemon Silver run at full speed. Saves work, and the in-game clock runs while you play.
Which games have you tested?
At full speed: Super Mario Land DX, Tetris DX, The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX, Super Mario Bros. Deluxe, Pokemon Gold and Pokemon Silver. Near full speed, with brief slowdowns in busy scenes: Pokemon Crystal, Pokemon Yellow and Pokemon Pinball. Currently slower: Shantae and Perfect Dark (the Game Boy Color game). Speed work is ongoing.
Do saves work?
Yes. Battery saves are kept by your flash cart, the same way N64 game saves are, and survive turning the console off. Saves up to 32 KB use SRAM and larger ones use FlashRAM; Cart64 sets this in the cartridge header.
What about games with a clock?
The in-game clock runs while you play. Time does not pass while the console is off yet. A version that uses the flash cart's own clock is coming.
Can I play original Game Boy games?
Yes. Original Game Boy (.gb) games work too, with a fixed color palette.
Which controller buttons?
D-pad or stick to move, A and B as on the handheld, Start is Start, and Z or C-down is Select.
Can I make the picture bigger?
Yes. Choose Fit when you make the cartridge: the game is shown 1.5 times bigger and smoothed. Sharp shows exact 1x pixels, which is smaller.
What does "This cartridge cannot start" mean?
The player found a problem with the cartridge and shows a code from 1 to 7. Most are fixed by making the cartridge again on cart64.com and copying it again. Code 6 means the game's cartridge type is not supported, and code 7 means the game needs an Expansion Pak. The troubleshooting guide explains every code.
Is Cart64 an emulator?
The player inside each cartridge is our own Game Boy Color emulator for the N64. It translates the Game Boy's processor code into the N64's own code as the game runs, and the N64's RSP draws the picture and makes the sound. It boots with libdragon's open-source, clean-room boot code, and there is no Nintendo code or BIOS in it.
Does Cart64 have games to download?
Only three free games made with Shiny Gen: Shiny Monsters Color, Shiny Crosser and Spark Garden. We do not host or link to any other games. Cart64 packages files you bring.
Will Game Boy Advance games work?
Not yet. Sign up for updates on the home page to hear when GBA support is ready.
Who makes Cart64?
Shiny Gen, an AI game maker that makes real Game Boy Color games. Cart64 is not affiliated with Nintendo or ModRetro.
